Vitamin D3

What is Vitamin D3?

Vitamin D is not a single compound but a group of vitamins, being the prohormones ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), the main sources for the hydroxylated metabolites which are active in animals.

Ergocalciferol is widely available from plants and fungi while cholecalciferol is formed from UV irradiation in the animal skin.

Vitamin D3 properties

Vit D is important for maintaining calcium levels and promoting bone health and development, but a large and still growing amount of research has found that Vitamin D3 also stimulates the immune system and is beneficial in respiratory tract infections (e.g. COVID).

Vitamin D3 is also essential in feed to ensure the animals health. Vitamin D3 is added in premixes, where the degradation is even higher due to the aggressive environment.

However, Vitamin D3 is highly unstable and has low water solubility. Its degradation in multivitamin supplements usually leads to non compliance of the label. To avoid that, overages are added.

CIRCE SCIENTIFIC
A Highly Stabilized

Vitamin D3

CIRCE Scientific has discovered and characterized through experimental screening a new crystalline form of Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) and resorcinol. Its high stability has been studied against light, heat and chemicals present in animal food premixes, in order to develop a novel and alternative formulation to current microencapsulation approaches to protect vitamin D from oxidation.

Our results show that the new crystalline form is extremely stable and it can become the basis for very efficient formulations of Vitamin D3 which fulfills the stability requirements of industrial applications.
