Ubiquinol

What is ubiquinol?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like nutrient, ubiquitously present in almost all cells, which plays an essential role in the energy production of cells through the respiratory chain in mitochondria. It has also several other functions of great importance for the cellular metabolism, as antioxidant and also involved in cell signaling and gene expression.

It has two forms: ubiquinone & ubiquinol that are constantly changing into the other form inside the human cells as they make their function. Ubiquinol is the reduced form of Coenzyme Q10, ubiquinol is the most common form of CoQ10 in vivo, and accounts for more than 80% of the total ubiquinol+ubiquinone pool in human plasma, intestine, and liver.

Ubiquinol properties

CoQ10 is vital for providing energy to cells, helping organs perform at their best, protecting cells and blood from oxidation. As the body ages, the natural Ubiquinol levels slowly decline. These important biological roles have motivated the use of CoQ10 l as dietary supplements for improving body protection against aging by oxidative stress with a particular focus on heart and neurodegenerative diseases.

However, the oral bioavailability of the highly lipophilic coenzyme Q10 is very low with an extremely poor aqueous solubility (0.7 ng/ml). Ubiquinol has been shown to be between 1,7 to 2 times more bioavailable than ubiquinone in solid formulations.  However, the more bioavailable form of Ubiquinol shows extreme chemical instability upon exposure to air, light and high temperature, making ubiquinone the default option in standard formulations which makes it difficult to prepare efficient pharmaceutical solid formulations.

CIRCE SCIENTIFIC
A HIGHLY STABILIZED

ubiquinol cocrystal

Through cocrystal engineering, CIRCE Scientific has developed a unique proprietary combination of ubiquinol and protocatechuic acid (PCA) that stabilizes ubiquinol, avoiding its oxidation into ubiquinone and also making it 25% more bioavailable with respect to the standard ubiquinol and more than 2 fold with respect to the more common solid ubiquinone formulations.

Benefits of CIRCE Scientific’s stabilized Ubiquinol

CIRCE Scientific’s cocrystallized Ubiquinol provides unique additional benefits:

High stability to oxidation

More sophisticated and unexpensive formulation

No toxicity concerns

15 %

25% more bioavailable than Ubiquinol

120 %

More than 150% more bioavailable than solid formulations of Ubiquinone
